copeland morris ENTWINED SONNET

Her shaded eyes, her necklace black velvet, onyx.
Anguish she spoke; and he carried on, obsessed
As only a young man could. An odd harmonics
Existed within the voice of a mourning dove.
She prepared him for the higher world above.
There and again she has safely seen him off;
They ought to rummage about, for hats to doff.
The birds compare notes: the tunes and chirps of freedom,
The house wrens too, in the garden her dream possessed,
Whose likeness is with proverb or season or kingdom,
Companion in sorrow, salt of Ishmael's tears,
The silver wake under which the mountain appears.
For whom else do their shadows make so bold--
To whom they reply in song a thousandfold?
